Nos toca salir por la noche en la ambulancia con todo el equipo. El cansancio se dibuja en nuestros rostros, el día no nos dio tregua.
Llegamos al domicilio, una señora de aterciopelada bata, nos recibe tumbada en su sofá. Es la hora de su programa favorito y está atenta a la televisión, hoy tocan las nominaciones.
Con miedo a interrumpirla, le pregunto desde cuando está con los síntomas catarrales y sin demasiado interés me responde que desde hace solo tres días, pero que estuvo tomando paracetamol y «con eso, a ella esto no se le quita».
Le pregunto que si no mejoró, por qué no fue a ver a su médico de familia.
A lo que su marido inmediatamente me increpa:
– ¡Si está mala!, ¡cómo va a ir al médico!. Nosotros tenemos seguridad social y por algo pagamos nuestros impuestos.
Respiro profundo, cuento hasta diez y comienzo la exploración.
Me pongo el fonendoscopio y a regañadientes consigo que baje el volumen de la televisión.
Unos pulmones ventilando perfectamente a juego con una saturación de oxígeno al 99% vuelven a minar mis fuerzas, y para colmo, ahora da la coincidencia que ni rastro de aquella terrible fiebre. El termómetro se detuvo en los 37ºC al igual que mi paciencia. Su marido rápidamente apuntilla mi moral con un «si es que ella no es de tener mucha fiebre».
Tomo aire, suspiro y le explico que no tiene complicación alguna, que debe continuar con paracetamol, reposo y cama.
La señora aparta por primera vez los ojos de la pantalla y escupe un despectivo «¿y no me manda nada?, para eso no os hubiera llamado».
Habitualmente soy de los que se preocupan por educar en los avisos, y no me suelo morder la lengua. Pero esta noche no merece la pena que discuta, no estoy con fuerzas para intentar vencer esta batalla. Tuve que dejar a mi hijo de dos años con la chica que lo cuida y él si estaba verdaderamente necesitado. Vómitos, diarrea y fiebre de 39 grados lo tenían postrado en un sofá lejos de mi presencia.
Hoy no estoy para perder el tiempo, aunque llevo puesto el traje de médico, no me encuentro a gusto viendo a pacientes a domicilio sin necesidad real de asistencia.
Lamento que independientemente de otros problemas, el colapso en las urgencias se deba también a el mal uso que la población hace de los recursos sanitarios.
Así de regreso a Urgencias me pregunto, ¿será que algún día aprenderemos a valorar el sistema sanitario que tenemos?.
Una llamada rompe mi reflexión, nos solicitan ir a visitar a un chico de 25 años con fiebre.
De momento me temo que esa pregunta no tendrá una afirmativa respuesta.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. But imagine if you added some great graphics or video clips to give your posts more, «pop»! Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said «You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.» She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
