Los que trabajamos en Emergencias estamos acostumbrados a algoritmos para la toma de decisiones, protocolos, “ABCs” y ser controlados por un incansable tic tac del reloj donde cada segundo es importante.
En este mundo sanitario de hipotérmicos corazones y taquicárdicas jornadas, un buen médico debe aprender el valor de una mirada para poder comprender así la importancia de un silencio.
En el Hospital nos apoyamos de distintos instrumentos para establecer un diagnóstico, electrocardiogramas, radiografías, analíticas pero a pesar de los avances de la ciencia, sigo siendo un romántico y no concibo un diagnóstico sin mirar unos ojos, ni pautar un tratamiento sin sentir previamente el tacto de una piel.
Los profesionales de la salud tenemos que ser observadores, curiosos, auténticos niños, y más aún en las urgencias extrahospitalarias donde el domicilio del paciente nos regala una información exclusiva, difícil de obtener desde la consulta de un hospital, claro está, a excepción del prestigioso dr. House y su particular equipo médico de «asalta casas».
La capacidad para leer una mirada es una virtud necesaria, porque estas nos cuentan historias que ya quisieran algunos libros tener tatuadas en su interior.
En este trabajo como en la vida, lo que importan no son las respuestas sino las preguntas. Y la reacción del cuerpo a algunos interrogantes hacen innecesario su contestación.
No creo que los ojos sean el espejo del alma sino una ventana, que se abre al pronunciar mágicas y apropiadas palabras, permitiéndonos ver lo que habitualmente no se muestra, lo que guardamos para nosotros, eso que en ocasiones nos perturba, nos quema y deseamos compartir pero consciente o inconscientemente lo secuestramos.
Muchos pacientes acuden a consultar lo que no les atormenta, sus palabras nos cuentan una historia y su cuerpo otra diferente.
Algunos vienen con un acompañante que tal vez sea más paciente que él y en ocasiones se convierte en el verdadero motivo de consulta.
Podría escribir un libro con lo que me dicen algunas miradas, pero el secreto profesional y mi selectiva amnesia por ahora me lo impiden.
Pero sin duda alguna, puedo afirmar que soy consciente del valor de una mirada en Urgencias, ¿y tú?

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said «You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.» She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. When I initially commented I clicked the «Notify me when new comments are added» checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Many thanks!

Today, I went to the beach front with my children.
