La RAE define la empatía como la identificación mental y afectiva de un sujeto con el estado de ánimo del otro. Es una definición muy sencilla de memorizar pero a veces muy difícil de practicar.
Llegó a urgencias con dolor abdominal, cara de quirófano y síntomas de libro.
Su analítica y ecografía nos confirmó la sospecha clínica, la paciente presentaba una apendicitis aguda.
Llamamos al cirujano hoy le tocaría faena.
Vino a explorar a nuestra joven paciente acompañado de sus residentes, unos prometedores cirujanos. Sus expertas manos le contaron lo que su abdomen nos gritaba.
«Avisen al anestesista, es una apendicitis» -sentenció desde su pijama verde.
A continuación como influencers de Twitter, su red profesional comenzó a movilizarse después de sus palabras. Uno habló con la familia, otro recopiló la historia clínica y el último confirmó que todo estaba preparado en el quirófano.
La cirugía fue rápida, magistral, docente, de las que no dejan a penas cicatriz en la piel.
Utilizó una singular técnica aprendida en su último congreso, y no hubo complicaciones.
A la mañana siguiente durante la visita a su paciente, el cirujano preguntó a sus residentes que le describieran la técnica quirúrgica al detalle, sus diferentes variantes y complicaciones.
No dejó de preguntarles hasta que erraron. Entonces con un simple gesto de satisfacción dijo: «debeis dormir menos y trabajar más», y triunfador de su hazaña pasó a la siguiente cama.
La joven paciente lo miró extrañada y dijo:
– yo tengo una pregunta que seguro usted no puede contestarla y ellos sí.
– jaja, ¿cuál es pequeña? -contestó desafiante el cirujano.
– mi nombre, ¿cuál es mi nombre? -preguntó la niña.
– el cirujano sonrió, intentó mirar de reojo la historia, pero fracasó, repasó mentalmente sus datos pero no recordó nada de la identificación de su paciente, y al final se dio por vencido y susurró un «no lo sé».
Nuestra adolescente paciente sonrió y le dijo:
» De nada me sirve que opere de una forma brillante si usted no sabe mi nombre. Yo no me llamo apendicitis, mi nombre es Ana. Soy su paciente, la que entró con miedo a este hospital y se irá con una minúscula cicatriz en el abdomen. Sin apéndice pero con una herida que tardará mucho más tiempo en cicatrizar. Y es que no soy una enfermedad, solo una persona que enfermó. Una persona que tuvo miedo y que necesitaba algo de apoyo y compresión, cosa que nunca tuve. Y es que de nada me sirvió que usted conociera la última técnica quirúrgica si desconocía ni nombre. Porque me sorprende que nadie les enseñé eso en los congresos. Me llamo Ana y hoy estoy segura de que no olvidará preguntar a ninguna otra paciente su nombre «.
El cirujano salió sin decir nada y una media sonrisa se le escapó a sus residentes.
Ana los despidió con el semblante serio y les dijo:
– Cuando le dije que él no sabía algo que vosotros sabíais, mentí.
Los residentes borraron esa media sonrisa y salieron de la habitación.
